Whiskey of the Week: Stagg Jr.

Last week we featured E. H. Taylor, so this week we decided to feature a bourbon made in honor of his partner and owner of the of the O. F. C. distillery, George T. Stagg. Stagg Jr is the little brother of George T. Stagg bourbon. It all comes out of the same mash bill, aged in the same barrels, uncut and unfiltered. The difference being Jr. is aged around 10 years where as George T. is aged no less than 15. The rich, sweet, chocolate and brown sugar flavors mingle in perfect balance with the bold rye spiciness. The boundless finish lingers with hints of cherries, cloves and smokiness.

George T. Stagg was born December 19, 1835, in Garrard County, Kentucky. While little is known of his early years, the impact his adult life had on the bourbon industry was quite impressive. He bought the O. F. C. Distillery in 1878 keeping E. H. Taylor as his Master Distiller. In 1904 the distillery changed its name to the George T. Stagg distillery and it’d keep that name for nearly a century. In 1999 the distillery was renamed Buffalo Trace and they’ve done well in keeping up with a longstanding tradition of making some of the best whiskies around.

Colonel E.H. Taylor Small Batch Bourbon is our Whiskey of the Week, and it’s only $6 all week!

As a descendant of two U.S. presidents, James Madison and Zachary Taylor, you might say he had leadership and ambition running through his blood. “The father of the modern bourbon industry” is celebrated for countless innovations he contributed to the bourbon industry in his time. Copper fermentation tanks, state-of-the-art grain equipment, column stills, modernized buildings, a more efficient sour mash technique and a first-of-its-kind steam heating system still used in the warehouses today, just to name a few. He is also the father of the distillery now known as Buffalo Trace, who hand crafted this bourbon in his memory.
E.H. Taylor is made from their mash bill #1, a low rye mash bill. As a bottled-in-bond bourbon, though it has no age statement, it is at least four years old. It is proofed at 100 after being distilled using copper stills and aged in century old warehouses. It has flavors of caramel corn sweetness mingled with butterscotch and licorice. The aftertaste is a soft mouth-feel that turns into subtle spices of pepper and tobacco.

Corsair’s Triple Smoke

Our Whiskey of the Week was distilled by Corsair, a very creative and fast growing operation out of Nashville, TN. Triple Smoke’s name is taken from the process it undergoes using cherry wood, peat and beechwood to smoke the malted barley. It’s then pot distilled and aged in charred new American oak. Did I mention it’s half off this week?

Two Nashville natives, Darek Bell and Andrew Webber, started making beer and wine together in Bell’s garage in the early 2000’s. It wasn’t long before they opened the first craft whiskey distillery in Nashville since prohibition. Their popularity has skyrocketed as they continue to distill a variety of high quality spirits from barrel-aged gin to absinthe. They’ve even started brewing beer in a new location called the Marathon Village Brewstillery. These dudes can’t be tied down.
